Veronica's "Day Off" - Story (Episode)

Updated: Nov 5, 2020

Veronica, the aloe vera, quickly becomes overwhelmed on her supposed day off.

Story (Draft 1)

Veronica, the aloe vera, on an early Sunday morning - is rudely awoken by the neighbours house party above her flat. The ceiling is creating dust and cracking above her.

In frustration, Veronica goes upstairs to complain about the noise. A house full of fleas answer the door, in the background she can see her housemate George (the ginger cat) partying and drinking with the fleas. Veronica expresses her annoyance of the noise to the neighbours. The neighbouring fleas apologise and agree to keep the noise down. Veronica leaves the door feeling accomplished and happy it was quickly resolved.

Once Veronica gets home, her laptop lights up with her parents calling her. She looks at the calendar and realises she has said that she'd have dinner with her family tonight. Answering the call, she is met with her parents very close to camera and expressing that they can't see her. After explaining that they need to move back and see the screen, they quickly ask if she has booked a table for tonight. Veronica explains that she's been busy and has completely forgotten, but will get to it later.

George enters the flat with the flea neighbours. Him and his friends sit on the couch, beers in hand, and start watching the football. Veronica excuses herself from the video chat and goes to talk to George. George says that they'll keep it down and she wont even know that they're here - soon after the group cheer as the team scores a goal spilling beer everywhere.

When she returns to the video chat with her parents they ask personal questions like "have you got a boyfriend... or girlfriend I suppose." and then go on about how they don't care who she's dating. After her mum is finished her tangent about talking about a gay man she met at a supermarket who helped her find the carrots, she explains that she isn't dating anyone. George can be heard in the background laughing at this statement about being single whilst getting a bottle of tequila out of the fridge - his laugh is met with a stare from veronica. Her parents then go onto talking about she needs a better lifegoal then working as a waitress in the café downstairs, that she needs to find a man..or woman, and that her successful sister is doing great with her new job.

George walks past the camera, drink in hand and her parents catch sight of him. They ask Veronica if that's George and embarrassingly start waving at him. Veronica then leaves George talking to her parents, when she hears a smash from near the lounge.

In front of the bookshelf one of the fleas had knocked off some of veronica's clay sculptures shattering them on the floor. Veronica comes in with a hoover and starts hoovering up after the fleas whilst hearing George make sarcastic comments on video call with her parents. Hoovering up the smashed clay sculpture causes the hoover to smoke and break.

The front door is suddenly opened by the landlord, letting himself into the flat, asking for the rent and making a throwaway sexist comment. Veronica makes a slight reaction but composes her and explains she'll get it to him by the end of the week. She then goes onto ask if he could look at her oven and now hoover as she's been trying to get hold of him for weeks. The landlord says he's been too busy to reply and will look at it at "some point", his head turns towards the TV and joins the fleas in watching the game.

Holding a broken hoover, George tells Veronica good luck when he's finished talking on the laptop and says "oh, I didn't know we had a hoover" and joins everyone on the sofa, passing the landlord a beer.

Going back on the video call she is met with her parents asking who Samantha is. She looks over to George who has his thumbs up and fleas cheer in the background to another goal.

Veronica is stood there holding a broken hoover so angry at everything. The fleas are bouncing and cheering in the background, her parents are saying they don't care if she's gay and the landlord kicks off shoes revealing his bare toes.

George walks over to Veronica and asks if she's okay. She then blows up in an angry rage and shouts at everyone to get out the house and shouts at each character with everything they did wrong. Silence.

George asks Veronica if she is alright (previous was in her head) and she silently walks to her bedroom.

She sits on her bed in silence and sighs. Suddenly a bed falls through the cracked ceiling and fleas are all stood on the bed after bouncing.

Veronica screams in anger.

End.

Feedback:

  • Make the ceiling cracking and dust falling throughout the story, more emphasis on the ending.

  • Make the outline shorted and more simplified

Story (Draft 2)

Veronica, the aloe vera, is rudely awoken by her neighbours having a party above her flat. Dust falls down from the ceiling and cracks are beginning to form.

Annoyed, she goes upstairs and complains to her neighbours, who are fleas about the sound. Her housemate George, the cat, can be seen drinking in the flat with the fleas.

When she gets back to her flat, her parents start video calling her. At first they don't understand how to use a computer and once they sort it they ask her if she has booked a table for dinner - Veronica had forgotten.

George enters the flat with the fleas, sit on the couch and start watching the game. They say they'll keep the noise down, but that obviously isn't the case.

Veronica's parents ask if she has a partner, she says she doesn't but George's laugh in the background makes them think otherwise. They change the conversation about how she needs a better life goal, how she needs a partner and how her sister is doing so well at her new job. They are quickly distracted by George coming in frame of the camera and start talking to him.

Veronica hears a smash by the bookshelf and notice that a flea has knocked off her handmade clay ornaments. She starts to tidy up after the fleas and hoovers the ornament up which obviously breaks the hoover.

The landlord abruptly walks into the flat with no warning asking about rent and makes a sexist throwaway comment. Veronica explains that'll shell get it to him by the end of the week and if he could check out the broken oven. He explains that he's too busy and will get round to it at "some point". The landlord then sits down on the couch to watch the game with the fleas.

George comes off the video call with Veronica's parents and wishes her luck. Her parents quickly ask who Samantha is.

The fleas cheer at another goal, her parents start explaining that they don't care if she's a lesbian, the party upstairs starts again and the ceiling starts to crack dropping dust, and the landlord kicks his shoes off revealing his bare feet.

End.
